Why this matters?

Climate change is a pressing global issue with significant impacts already being felt in Canada and worldwide. Reducing CO₂ emissions is critical to addressing this challenge. Whether we're global citizens, academics, or members of Mila, we have a role to play in this effort, and one way to contribute is by considering our travel habits.

Global Citizens

To stay within planetary boundaries, we should emit no more than 2.1 t CO₂/year. For instance, a round-trip transatlantic flight (e.g. NYC–London) uses almost half that budget (0.986 t CO₂).

As Academics

Reducing travel is one of the most effective ways for academics, especially professors, to lower their carbon footprint. This change can be made without significantly harming career trajectories.

At Mila

Mila’s internal report highlights air travel as the main source of our emissions, showing a clear opportunity for targeted reduction.
